Natural Hair 101: 3 Myths That You Should Ignore

Natural Hair 101: 3 Myths That You Should Ignore

Let’s face it, not everyone likes natural hair. I know what you’re thinking, who would hate luscious naturally curly hair. Well, growing up in a Hispanic household, I would hear a lot of misconceptions about naturally curly hair. It sincerely delayed my natural hair journey because for a long time I thought it was ugly.

Now that I’m older and much more educated, I wanted to warn others on the type of ignorance you should ignore if you are choosing to go natural.

Myth #1: Natural Hair is Hard or Nappy

Natural hair that appears to be dry

If you know how to detangle your hair or put the right products in it, then this myth is non-existent. When our hair gets dry, then we may experience knotting and matted tangled hair. However, natural hair requires a ton of moisture because it’s so naturally dry.

You will barely see a girl with natural hair walk outside with dry hair. Her hair will be sleeked up bouncing with beauty. She knows how to maintain her hair just like every naturalist will learn how to.

It may seem “hard” to comb through AT FIRST, but when you get the hang of it, you will find out that your hair has the world’s softest curls.

Myth #2: Natural Hair is Short And Takes Long To Grow

A girl's natural hair shrinked on one side and stretched on the other.

First of all, it’s called shrinkage. Usually, when wet, our hair becomes curly appearing short. I hate this myth because people are so dumb. It’s always satisfying seeing the girls stretching out with what you think is a TWA (teeny weeny afro) and seeing that their hair runs down their back.

With type 4 hair being the kinkiest, it’s easy to get fooled that naturally curly hair never grows when in actuality that is very much wrong. Take pictures in your journey and you will see the growth.

Myth #3: Natural Hair is Unattractive

This is more of a myth to me. There are jerks who honestly think natural hair is unattractive compared to the societal beauty standard of long, thin, blonde hair. When people think of black hair, they think about TWA’s, which I think are the bomb, but many people think of it as boyish and again dry-looking hair.

However, there are many black women with naturally curly hair, whether it is short or long, who are stunning. There are many black women with creative minds who create goddess hairstyles to illuminate the beauty of their natural hair.

Don’t let societal standards delay your journey because trust me this journey will give you confidence.
