Getting Screwed Over By Internship Lies

Getting Screwed Over By Internship Lies

So I am at a point where I am just frustrated with lies being posted on these websites. If you don’t know by now, I am trying to slide my way into the television industry. I’ve been applying to many internships knowing full well I’ll be rejected. I don’t have much experience producing, editing, nor writing scripts. So, I’ve been to trying to get into smaller internships in the hopes of getting some valuable experience.

Storytime….

Last summer, I reached a dead end and had two unpaid internships. One went well, while the other was just…questionable. My supervisor kept nagging me into the fall semester to hand out flyers, something she was very pushy about, and I was happy to quit. If I were being honest, I took those internships over the summer because no one wanted to hire me as an editorial assistant. Fast forward about a year later, and I’m trying to make my way onto T.V writing.

Website vs. Reality

I am really skeptical this time around about just settling down for any internship that looks good online. In fact, I’ve been calling these websites up asking about the internships they offer. And frankly, many of their replies are disappointing. I admire their honesty, but it sucks when they aren’t willing to give the same experience they promise to give out listed on their website. Instead of producing, assisting, writing, or being mentored, it is simply just catering, event planning, or who knows, cleaning.

I already feel like the majority of the great television internships are in LA and the more I search here in NY, the more I become disappointed. But, I still need more experience, like a ton, and I am willing to keep searching just for that. I know it will happen regardless.
