“Impossible” Dreams

“Impossible” Dreams

At one point in life, you’re going to dream about having a particular career. Whether it’s being a rock star or a singer, you want that audience as well as the success that comes with it. In most cases, these dreams fade away because you start to realize that reality is dominant. You might be failing the classes to achieve that dream, you might change your mind, or worse of all, someone has talked you out of it.

We are all guilty of listening to someone’s advice. When I finally joined the blogging community and read others’ work, I felt so much more positive as well as independent. With the negative stigma of bloggers being poor, you expect the community to be ancient or negative themselves. However, it’s quite the opposite and much more uplifting than I thought. There are so many people in this world who will tell you do things only because of money. Although it might feel great temporarily because you are getting paid, you really have no passion for it. I’m those type of people who has to engage and actually love what I’m doing whether it’s paid or unpaid (you never know later on). Many times you have to tune out to your close ones who disagree with that mindset.

Although the negative stigma of being a blogger nevertheless a writer hasn’t really stopped me, it still does still scare me because I do want to reach a large audience one day. Particularly, I want to become a screenwriter in the future. I specifically want to give women of color of all shades to act and prosper. Unfortunately, there aren’t many African American women in television as compared to white women. When they are given the spotlight, they are subjected to stereotypes which make sense considering only about 4-5% of showrunners are black. Additionally, you don’t see DARK African American women at all. It pains me because although we have social media at its peak today, colorism is still at its finest.

I want to do the behind the scene portion of television producing: screenwriting. Hopefully, more black screenwriters can join me one day to raise the percentage of black screenwriters in America. I feature this short story because you’d expect for these percentages to be higher in 2018, yet they are still in the single digit range. It’s disappointing and seems “impossible” to achieve especially since writers alone have it hard enough to sell a script and make ends meet. But, this is a serious passion of mine, past the money issue and why not advocate undermined social issues through television as it’s a force. As a black young woman, I am going to feel extremely blessed and proud the day I see more people of color of ALL SHADES being represented on and off screen. I might change my mind someday, but as of now, I can still see myself living this “impossible” dream.

That being said, the positivity in the blogging community will seriously uplift you. This community deserves much more attention and a genuine voice than the unfortunate “impossible” stigma it receives. I say just continue to go for the passion even if in society’s eyes, it’s viewed as meaningless and “impossible” to achieve.

  1. Hello Tiana,

I admire you for knowing what you want and having your dream. It is not impossible. It may look like it’s far-reaching now but every action that you take to achieve this goal is a step closer to this dream.

When I first started blogging, I could not imagine how I will be able to find my community. A year ago, it seems such a difficult feat. But I am now slowly finding my community. As per Andrea, I’m also glad that you’re a part of our Twitter community.

    Thank you for sharing this.

    Best,
    Sigrid

    1. I’m very happy that you enjoyed this. As for the community, I am so glad I got involved with it. The blogging community is so helpful and I feel even happier as a person. I’m glad that everyone can express how they feel without immaturity. Nevertheless, I’m very appreciative of people like you who not only support, but also give off positive vibes 🙂
